Happy Holidays CGIA Members,
I hope that everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and are all ready for Christmas. I wanted to provide an update after our Annual Conference held in Brunswick, GA this year. The conference was a huge success!! Below is a summary from the conference.
First off, I wanted to congratulate the 2019 Board Members and the new NE Regional Director:
⦁ Matt Harris elected to President
⦁ Bud Hall elected to Vice President
⦁ Jim Echoff elected to Treasurer
⦁ Jeff Kilpatrick elected to Secretary
⦁ Dick Davidson elected to NE Regional Director
Everyone who attended the tour/boat ride at CG Station Brunswick had an awesome time. A great deal of positive feedback. CGIA will show our appreciation to the Senior Chief, his crew and the small boat station for all they did by sending a letter to Senior Chief with a copy to the Group Commander and District Command recognizing the Senior Chief and his crew for their professionalism and the excellent job. Senior Chief and his crew showed tremendous professional courtesy towards all the CGIA members in attendance. It is always a pleasure to reunite with the CG and be able to share our experience and knowledge with the upcoming members serving in the CG.
It has been voted on that the 2020 Reunion/Conference will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, October 8 thru 11. Gus Oviedo will be organizing the conference for 2020. A hotel has been selected, in very close proximity to airport for convenience of the members. Jeff Kilpatrick has agreed to reach out to Gus Oviedo to convey the importance of having activities for members and their significant others to do while visiting conference sites. There was discussion to consider at trip to the Grand Canyon or Lake Havasu during the conference. David Dickerson has volunteered to reach out to the member’s and seek their involvement. Remember that the success of the conferences hinder on the input, and attendance, of ALL of our members. So if you have an idea, please pass it on to Gus Oviedo, your Regional Director or any Board member.
Here are some other important points:
● President Matt Harris reported this new fiscal year has resulted in 13 new active duty agents; 5 new civilian agents; and 12 new reserve agents.
● President Matt Harris continues to build the relationship between CGIA and CGIS HQ. Which has resulted in the implantation of the S/A of the Year Award for 2019; which an agent has been selected.
● The creation of the CGIA Facebook page should be completed after the holidays. Once it is up and running, an update will be sent out with the link.
● Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) Discussion. Coast Guard is working with Department of Homeland Security to determine criteria for concealed carry. CGIS is no longer working on this project. More information will be passed when available.
Remember that the purpose of these updates to make sure that all information, decisions, and notifications are related to all members of CGIA. This transparency will allow ever member to see the direction that CGIA is heading and allow for an equal vote on issues that affect the association.
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!
